As a student of our 1:1 mentored Web Development program, you will deliver a responsive portfolio website using HTML, CSS, Bootstrap and jQuery. In the second unit you’ll be building your first e-commerce web-app, exploring the Rails framework, and building in features like login, payment and security. To ensure you get the most out of your time at the Code & Surf Retreat, the course starts before you depart for Santa Cruz.
As a student of our UX Design program, you will build your first product using the UX process, starting with methodology, usability analysis and information architecture. By the end of the course, you’ll complete the structure and design of web and mobile versions of your app, create wireframes, test user flows and iterate on results for your portfolio. To ensure you get the most out of your time at the Code & Surf Retreat, the course starts before you depart for Santa Cruz.
Every morning, you’ll wake up in a beach villa, surrounded by the sounds of the ocean. Your afternoons will be spent engaging in a host of outdoor activities with the group and alone, including learning to surf, yoga on the beach and BBQs. Other activities will include group dinners and hiking trips in this beautiful region. The beach villa and activities are provided by our friends atOutsite.
Working withOutsite Santa Cruz, CareerFoundry is taking you to the only beach villa coworking space in the San Francisco Bay Area, with a location just one block from the ocean and scenic West Cliff Drive. There are numerous beautiful beaches, quiet hidden coves and scenic bay views a stone's throw from the villa so just hop on one of the bikes provided to explore the coast! After a busy morning working on your CareerFoundry coursework theOutsite team will organise afternoon activities including surfing lessons, hiking trips and BBQs for the whole group to enjoy.
Mornings will be spent in co-working sessions with our mentors-in-residence, experts in UX Design and Web Development. They’ll be on-hand throughout your week in Santa Cruz to give you the advice and practical input you need to excel in your studies as you proceed through your CF courseware.
Working as a group of UX Designers and Web Developers this is the perfect opportunity for you to collaborate on a project, network, learn from others, find a co-founder or simply bounce around ideas with others in your field.
You’ll have the time and help to work on that interesting side-project you’ve been dreaming of -- or perhaps you’ve simply always wanted to surf! Use this week to spend time indulging in your extracurricular activities, whether web- or beach-based!

Our Code & Surf Retreat will be taking place between August 8th and August 15th 2015 in Santa Cruz, California, USA.
To ensure the group is more or less at the same level when on the Retreat, we ask all students to have completed around 10 tasks of the CareerFoundry UX Design or Web Development course before leaving for Santa Cruz.
All of our courses are designed for complete beginners and mentored by experts in the industry to take you from newbie in tech to job-ready professional.
Your community will consist of between 10 and 12 students of web development and UX Design as well as two mentors-in-residence. By having UX and web development students together it will give you the chance to collaborate on projects, find co-founders for an enterprise and become part of an environment buzzing with ideas and creativity.
No, the Code & Surf Retreat is only available for one week in August on the dates specified.
During your time at the Code & Surf Retreat, you’ll be working through your CareerFoundry Web Development or UX Design courseware, as well as collaborating on projects with other students. If you’d like to know more about the details of our courses, check them out here:Web Development,UX Design
The accommodation, provided byOutsite, will consist of a large beach house and co-working space, accommodating 14 people in total. The house has two private rooms (for the mentors) and three large shared rooms, one hosting five people, one hosting two people, and one hosting three people. All rooms will be mixed and bathrooms are also shared.
Over the course of the week you’ll spend your mornings studying your course with your mentor on-hand, while your afternoons will consist of learning to surf, practicing yoga on the beach, hiking and exploring this beautiful coastal paradise. In the evenings there will be BBQs and drinks on the beach.

The Code & Surf Retreat is open to all ages and backgrounds interested in on-boarding new skills to advance their own careers, start up a business or break into the tech industry. The Retreat would appeal especially to those interested in collaboration, meeting others and exchanging ideas.
No, we want people who are serious about learning web development or UX Design to take part in the Code & Surf Retreat and therefore we cannot accommodate people who are only interested in the extra-curricular activities.
Any student who takes part in the Code & Surf Retreat is responsible for having the appropriate travel, cancelation, health, accident and personal liability insurance in place.
All selected students need to make their own travel arrangements and fly to SFO (San Francisco) or San Jose airports. Depending on your flight arrival times, we may be able to arrange a transfer from the airport to the Code & Surf Retreat in Santa Cruz - we will contact you to see if arrival times work out for a group pickup. If this isn’t possible, we will provide you with comprehensive directions.
At this time the Code & Surf Retreat in Santa Cruz in August 2015 is the only trip planned - however we do hope to do more in the future. By providing your email address we will keep you updated on any future events and initiatives.
Yes. In addition to the 3 prize draw winners there will be another 7 spots at the Code & Surf Retreat in Santa Cruz . These spots will be offered to those who entered the prize draw as well as current CF students and partners for a reduced rate. This will naturally include our online mentored UX Design or Web Development course. We’ll be able to provide you with more information via email about this after the prize draw closes on June 24th.
Unfortunately due to the limited capacity at the Retreat we can only accommodate the 3 individual prize draw winners and offer the other vacant spots at a reduced rate to our current or new CareerFoundry students.
As soon as we’ve announced the prize draw winners, we expect them to start their course as soon as possible in preparation for the Retreat. After June 24th we’ll offer the remaining 7 spots (for a reduced price) to everyone who has signed up and to our current and new students, as well as selected partners. We also expect these students have started their CareerFoundry course in advance of the Retreat. CareerFoundry has the right to take away the place on the Retreat of any participant who shows no or too little progress in their course.
The Code & Surf Retreat is a co-organised byCareerFoundry andOutSite. CareerFoundry provides the course content and mentors-in-residence for the morning program of studying, collaborating and co-working. OutSite is the operator of the Code & Surf Retreat house and co-working space in Santa Cruz, CA. They will be taking care of the accommodation, co-working space and organising the outdoor activities in the afternoons such as surf lessons, yoga and hiking.
Not at all. People from all levels are welcome to join. All of the activities, from surfing, hiking and yoga are catered to beginners.
If you urgently need to get some (remote) work done, you can of course get that done on the Retreat. However we expect you to be free to focus on your CareerFoundry coursework and be fully involved in the group activities.
Yes, the raffle is open to everyone, including current CareerFoundry students and alumni. Please note that this doesn’t mean we’ll refund your current course fee. In case a current student or alumnus is a raffle winner, the prize includes another CF course, which you can take. After the raffle the additional 7 spots will be offered to everyone who has entered the raffle as well as current CF students and alumni.
