Thinking about changing careers? Heed this career advice from a UX / UI designer

If you’re looking to change careers to UX or UI design, everything can seem daunting. You’ll no doubt experience some of the most common career-change fears, and that’s perfectly natural; after all, there is so much you don’t know about your new path. Sure, you know the likely route to go down—studying design, creating a portfolio, applying for jobs—but what is it like in reality? What pitfalls should you avoid? What does a UI designer actually do in their day-to-day job?

To find answers to all of these questions, you could continue researching and poking about in dark corners of the internet, but there is an easier way: Get your career advice from a UX or UI designer. Yep, like an actual living, breathing one.

While you might initially assume that expert designers will be far too busy to answer queries about what the world of UX and UI design is like from the inside, the fact is that most are only too happy to share. In fact, many designers are career-changers themselves, and so they are excited to pay it forward. Passion for design is contagious, after all.

In such an exciting and developing industry, the right career advice from a UX designer already in the field can make all the difference. They can advise you on which tools to start using, sorting the industry benchmarks from the passing fads. Which areas of the discipline to keep an eye on for the future, and which are becoming outdated and not worth your time. This can all add up to helping you direct your own development to become a fully equipped UX/UI designer with their finger on the industry pulse.

Even better than feeling less afraid, more relieved and confident, getting career advice from a UX/UI designer can leave you inspired. It’s for this reason that the importance of having a mentor in UX design cannot be overstated—having someone who’s been through it all before and knows the lay of the land is invaluable. So gather all of the questions that come into your head as you start on your UX or UI design journey, write them down somewhere useful, and when the opportunity arises, don’t be afraid to ask them all.
