You probably won\u2019t be able to decipher the data without delving into it, and it\u2019s unlikely that you\u2019ll be able to spot trends and patterns at first glance.<\/p>\n<p>Now imagine seeing the same data presented as a bar chart, or on a color-coded map. There\u2019s a huge difference between simply having lots of data versus actually understanding how to use it to drive actions and decisions\u2014and data visualization bridges that gap.<\/p>\n<p>There are two broad categories of data visualization: exploration and explanation. Exploration vs. explanation<\/h3>\n<p>We\u2019ll look at specific types of data visualization later on, but for now, it\u2019s important to distinguish between exploratory and explanatory data visualization.<\/p>\n<p>In a nutshell, exploratory data visualization helps you figure out what\u2019s in your data, while explanatory visualization helps you to communicate what you\u2019ve found. Exploration takes place while you\u2019re still analyzing the data, while explanation comes towards the end of the process when you\u2019re ready to share your findings.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"exploration\">Exploration<\/h4>\n<p>When faced with a new dataset, one of the first things you\u2019ll do is carry out an <a href=\"https:\/\/careerfoundry.inbearbeitung.de\/en\/blog\/data-analytics\/exploratory-data-analysis\/\">exploratory data analysis<\/a>. Why is data visualization important?<\/h2>\n<p>The importance of effective data visualization is rooted in the importance of data analytics in general.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re living in an increasingly data-rich world; at the start of 2020, the digital universe comprised <a href=\"https:\/\/seedscientific.com\/how-much-data-is-created-every-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approximately 44 zettabytes of data<\/a>. For perspective, one zettabyte is roughly equal to a trillion gigabytes. By 2025, it\u2019s estimated that around 463 exabytes of data will be created every 24 hours across the globe. An exabyte is equivalent to one billion gigabytes. Basically, we\u2019re producing tons and tons of data all the time.<\/p>\n<p>Data analytics allows us to make sense of (at least some of) that data. From a business perspective, it enables companies to learn from the past and plan ahead for the future. In fields like healthcare, it can help to improve patient care and treatment. In finance and insurance, it can help to assess risk and combat fraudulent activity. Essentially, we need data analytics in order to make smart decisions\u2014and data visualization is a crucial part of that.<\/p>\n<p>Data visualization helps us to understand what certain data is telling us, presenting it in a way that\u2019s accessible to a range of audiences\u2014not just data experts. When should you visualize your data?<\/h2>\n<p>Aside from exploratory data visualization which takes place in the early stages, data visualization usually comprises the final step in <a href=\"https:\/\/careerfoundry.inbearbeitung.de\/en\/blog\/data-analytics\/the-data-analysis-process-step-by-step\/\">the data analysis process<\/a>. With that in mind, let\u2019s consider what kinds of insights you can convey with data visualizations.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"what-is-data-visualization-used-for\">What is data visualization used for?<\/h3>\n<p>Within the broader goal of conveying key insights, different visualizations can be used to tell different stories. Data visualizations can be used to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Convey changes over time:<\/strong> For example, a line graph could be used to present how the value of Bitcoin changed over a certain time period.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Determine the frequency of events:<\/strong> You could use a histogram to visualize the frequency distribution of a single event over a certain time period (e.g. number of internet users per year from 2007 to 2021). The visualization you choose depends on the type of data you\u2019re working with and what you want to convey or highlight. It\u2019s also important to consider the complexity of your data and how many different variables are involved. Not all types of data visualization lend themselves to elaborate or complex depictions, so it\u2019s important to choose a suitable technique.<\/p>\n<p>Before we explore some of the most common types of data visualization, let\u2019s first introduce five main data visualization categories.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"five-data-visualization-categories\">Five data visualization categories<\/h3>\n<p>When considering the different types of data viz, it helps to be aware of the different categories that these visualizations may fall into:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Temporal data visualizations<\/strong> are linear and one-dimensional. Examples include scatterplots, timelines, and line graphs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hierarchical<\/strong> <strong>visualizations<\/strong> organize groups within larger groups, and are often used to display clusters of information. Examples include tree diagrams, ring charts, and sunburst diagrams.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Network<\/strong> <strong>visualizations<\/strong> show the relationships and connections between multiple datasets. Examples include matrix charts, word clouds, and node-link diagrams.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Multidimensional or 3D visualizations<\/strong> are used to depict two or more variables. Examples include pie charts, Venn diagrams, stacked bar graphs, and histograms.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Geospatial visualizations<\/strong> convey various data points in relation to physical, real-world locations (for example, voting patterns across a certain country). Examples include heat maps, cartograms, and density maps.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With those categories in mind, let\u2019s explore some of the most common types of data visualization.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"five-common-types-of-data-visualization-and-when-to-use-them\">Five common types of data visualization (and when to use them)<\/h3>\n<p>In this section, we\u2019ll introduce some useful types of data visualization. We\u2019ll also point you to our more comprehensive guide where you can learn about additional data visualization methods and how to use them.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"scatterplots\">1. Scatterplots<\/h4>\n<p>Scatterplots (or scatter graphs) visualize the relationship between two variables. One variable is shown on the x-axis, and the other on the y-axis, with each data point depicted as a single \u201cdot\u201d or item on the graph. For example, if you wanted to visualize the relationship between a person\u2019s height and weight, or between how many carats a diamond measures and its monetary value, you could easily visualize this using a scatterplot.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to bear in mind that scatterplots simply describe the correlation between two variables; they don\u2019t infer any kind of cause-and-effect relationship.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"bar-charts\">2. Bar charts<\/h4>\n<p>Bar charts are used to plot categorical data against discrete values.<\/p>\n<p>Categorical data refers to data that is not numeric, and it\u2019s often used to describe certain traits or characteristics. Pie charts<\/h4>\n<p>Just like bar charts, pie charts are used to visualize categorical data.<\/p>\n<p>However, while bar charts represent multiple categories of data, pie charts are used to visualize just one single variable broken down into percentages or proportions. A pie chart is essentially a circle divided into different \u201cslices,\u201d with each slice representing the percentage it contributes to the whole.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, the size of each pie slice is proportional to how much it contributes to the whole \u201cpie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"A pie chart with different segments representing different hair colors\" src=\"\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/old-blog-uploads\/hair-color-pie-chart-1.png\" alt=\"A pie chart with different segments representing different hair colors\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"nbsp\"><\/h4>\n<p>Imagine you have a class of thirty students and you want to divide them up based on what color t-shirt they\u2019re wearing on a given day.<\/p>\n<p>The possible \u201cslices\u201d are red, green, blue, and yellow, with each color representing 40%, 30%, 25%, and 5% of the class total respectively. You could easily visualize this using a pie chart\u2014and the yellow slice (5%) would be considerably thinner than the red slice (40%)! Pie charts are best suited for data that can be split into a maximum of five or six categories.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"network-graphs\">4. Network graphs<\/h4>\n<p>Not all data is simple enough to be summarized in a bar or pie chart. For those more complex datasets, there are a range of more elaborate data visualizations at your disposal\u2014network graphs being one of them.<\/p>\n<p>Network graphs show how different elements or entities within a network relate to one another, with each element represented by an individual node. You could use a network graph to draw connections and parallels between all your customers or customer groups.<\/p>\n<p>With any luck, certain clusters and patterns would emerge, giving you a logical means by which to group your audience.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"geographical-maps\">5. Geographical maps<\/h4>\n<p>Geo maps are used to visualize the distribution of data in relation to a physical, geographical area.<\/p>\n<p>For example, you could use a color-coded map to see how natural oil reserves are distributed across the world, or to visualize how different states voted in a political election.
