Katherine Lu's Portfolio Project
During the CareerFoundry UI for UX Design Specialization, you’ll create an awesome portfolio project that demonstrates your new skills. Below is a breakdown of graduate Katherine’s ‘House House Home’ portfolio project. If you’d like to visit her full portfolio, you can do so here.
Hi Katherine! Talk us through what inspired you to make a career change into UX/UI design?
Most of my previous roles focused on updating and managing processes. I managed corporate travel, worked as an office manager and in HR, and worked in operations at a medical device company. All of these roles helped me realize that my strengths lie in grasping how processes work and analytical problem-solving. Even though I was competent and excelled in my roles, I knew I had other skills that weren’t being used. I’m a visual thinker, and I love connecting and talking to people. My career change into design has helped me make use of my skillset more holistically!
What did you enjoy most about the UI for UX Specialization Course?
I loved learning with CareerFoundry because the material was accessible and clear. I felt confident that I was on the right track towards working in a career path that really suited my interests and skills. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, and I felt supported by the CF community the whole way through.
With regards to your new career, what are your hopes for the future?
I hope to work in a capacity where I can help mentor and guide people into crafting a career that aligns with their goals. This could be as a design manager or in design community building. The title doesn’t matter to me so much as the relationship I want to cultivate with others.
Tell us about this portfolio project.
I’m happy with how much of my personality I was able to infuse into the design! Even though it’s a student project, it’s still near and dear to me. The nice thing about the portfolio projects I did with CareerFoundry is that I had complete ownership of the design, branding, and visual identity. In the case of House House Home, I thought creating the mood boards was a fun exercise that I ought to fit more into my current design process. There are so many roads one can go down when designing, so the process that CareerFoundry taught in the UI for UX Course helped give the project a focus.
