What do you need to take the UX Design Course with a Bildungsgutschein?

What you need:

• Must be unemployed or facing the possibility of unemployment

• Proof of residency in Germany

The Bildungsgutschein program is only available for German residents who are in possession of their Anmeldebescheinigung (proof that you are registered and living in Germany).

• Proficiency in English at B1.2 level or above

• Time to dedicate weekly to the course

20 hours per week if you are doing the course part-time or 40 hours per week if you are doing the course full-time.

• A computer (Mac or PC) and an internet connection

• An interest in UX Design

If you are already reading books and blog posts about UX design, that’s a great sign! If you are unsure about whether UX design is really for you, you can find out in the following ways:

What you don’t need:

• A background in design or tech

You don’t need a college degree or previous design-related work experience in order to be successful on the course or land a job. The course has been built to take you from beginner to job-ready—so all you really need is a computer with a stable internet connection, and the motivation to succeed! A study by job board Indeed found that 84% of employers think bootcamp grads are ‘more prepared’ or ‘just as prepared’ to be high performers as degree holders. (Indeed)

• Unlimited free time

You can study part-time with a pace of 20 hours per week to finish the course in 10.3 months. You can also complete the course in 5.3 months by committing 40 hours per week to the coursework.

• To learn all on your own

The course combines the flexibility of online learning with the personalized mentorship and guidance  traditionally associated with brick-and-mortar institutions. Much like a college professor might inspire you to pursue a career in a certain field, your Mentor, Tutor, Career Specialist, and Student Advisor will all help keep you motivated and on track.

• To lose your unemployment benefits

While taking the UX Design Course with a Bildungsgutschein, you are still entitled to receive your unemployment benefits.

Schedule an appointment with the Agentur für Arbeit

If you haven’t been in touch with the job center before, you can find your local center simply by searching online, e.g. “Agentur für Arbeit Berlin” or “Agentur für Arbeit near me”. Once you’ve made an appointment, you’ll be assigned an advisor.

Prepare for your appointment at the Agentur für Arbeit

We’ve created an application guide to help you prepare for your appointment at the Agentur für Arbeit, and convince your advisor to approve your participation in the course. The guide covers all the necessary documents you need for the appointment.

Enroll in the CareerFoundry course

The Agentur für Arbeit has issued you a Bildungsgutschein—congratulations!

Now you can begin the enrollment process. Simply press the "Get in contact with us" button and we'll notify you about the next steps.

It takes 10-14 days to complete the enrollment steps, so make sure to account for this when you are choosing your course start date.

Get in contact with us

1.    Which documents do I need to provide?

The Agentur für Arbeit might require an official, personalized offer which includes the Maßnahmenummer (course codes), as well as further details about prices and the duration and structure of the course. If you need further documentation, please check the website and download your complete application guide.

2.    Where can I find the next start dates?

Our courses start alternately every 2 weeks, always on a Monday. If the Monday falls on a public holiday, courses start on a Tuesday. To find out more about our next start dates, check the respective course pages: UX Design and UI Design.

3.    What kind of job can I get after the course?

You will be ready for “Junior UX Designer” or “UX Designer” roles based on the curriculum. If you have transferable skills from your past career, you can potentially get a more senior role by crafting the right story with your Career Specialist. Many job ads for UX designers ask for 2+ years’ experience, but it is very often part of their “wishlist” rather than a requirement.

4.    Do I get a certificate at the end?

You will receive a certificate when you complete the course to make your new qualifications easy for employers to see.

5.    Where and when am I supposed to work on the course?

The courses at CareerFoundry are completely online, so you can work whenever and wherever there is a Wi-Fi connection. Students are expected to dedicate 40 hours per week (full-time) / 20 hours per week (part-time). It’s important to consider the course as a full-time job and strive to achieve the suggested amount of learning hours per week in order to finish the course on time. Students can schedule their learning time flexibly. However, we highly recommend sticking to a regular learning routine from Monday-Friday, between 8.30 and 18.30, in order to avoid misunderstandings with the Unemployment Agency in case they require a performance record sheet.

6.    What happens if I am sick?

If you are sick, you need to go to the doctor and get a sick note. You need to provide both CareerFoundry and the Agentur für Arbeit with a scanned copy of the sick note no later than three days after it has been issued by the doctor. CareerFoundry will then grant you an extension accordingly based on the number of sick days (weekends and public holidays are not included).

7.    What happens if I can’t finish the course on time?

If you realize that you don’t have enough time to finish the course, you need to get in touch with CareerFoundry and discuss whether you’re eligible for an extension. The extension then needs to be discussed and approved by the Agentur für Arbeit. The process requires a new offer and a new Bildungsgutschein. If the Agentur für Arbeit agrees to an extension, you can work on your course until the date stated on the new Bildungsgutschein.

8.    What happens if I find a job while doing the course?

If you find a job and need to stop the course, you need to inform both the Agentur für Arbeit and CareerFoundry. If participants find a job during the course, the Agentur für Arbeit usually stops the payment and cancels the course. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to stop the course. If this scenario should arise, you have the following options: If the Agentur für Arbeit has paid the full course fee, you can go ahead with the course with no additional fees until the course end date. If you decide to stop the course, no extra fees will be charged to you, nor to the Agentur für Arbeit. If the Agentur für Arbeit has not yet paid the full course fee, you can go ahead with the course and pay the outstanding difference yourself as a private student. You can ask your future employer to cover the outstanding course fee.

9.    Can I go on vacation during the course?

Students are not supposed to take any unapproved time off during the course. Vacation days and general absences that occur during the course can only be granted and added on to the course duration in consultation with the relevant contact person at the Agentur für Arbeit.

10.    Can I apply for more than one course with the Bildungsgutschein?

A Bildungsgutschein only enables you to take one course. Once you have completed a course, you can ask your contact person at the Agentur für Arbeit to grant a second Bildungsgutschein in order to access another course.

11.    Is there an exam to pass at the end of the course?

There is no final exam to pass in order to finish the course. For each module, there are tasks to submit which need to be approved by your Mentor or Tutor. During the course, students work on a project that has to be developed by the end of the course.

12.    How am I supported in the job search?

Working on the Job Preparation Course will give you the right tools to start applying for a job in tech. You will be supported by CareerFoundry’s Career Specialists for up to 6 months after your UX Design Course end date.

13.    Can I change my course from part-time to full-time and vice-versa?

It’s not possible to change from part-time to full-time, or the other way around. You can only take the course part-time if your advisor at the Agentur für Arbeit approves it, and this must be stipulated in your Bildungsgutschein.
