Data Analytics in Practice

Learn what data analysts do, what tools they use to process data, and how they apply their skills in different industries. Prepare to kick off your own analysis by getting familiar with the dataset you’ll be working with in your course project.

Introduction to Excel

Get hands-on with Excel, one of the primary tools used by data analysts to quickly access and generate key insights from data. Learn how to sort, filter, format, organize, and create useful visualizations from a dataset.

Understanding Your Dataset

Analyze and describe your dataset—including where it came from, how large it is, and what’s missing—in order to identify sources of bias and better understand how it relates to the problem at hand.

Cleaning Your Data

Identify sources of error in your data, and learn how to clean your dataset to minimze potential issues.

Organizing Your Data

Aggregate, filter, sort, and modify your dataset—and use tools like pivot tables to generate new insights about groups of records, such as trends over a time period.

Introduction to Analytical Methods

Compare different approaches to data analysis—such as descriptive, predictive, and diagnostic—understanding when to apply each one to tackle different types of business problems.

Conducting a Descriptive Analysis

Apply statistical methods to your dataset using Excel to complete a thorough descriptive analysis.

Developing Insights

Form hypotheses around how a dataset will look, and generate useful insights about the data by comparing the behaviour of the data to your first estimates.

Visualizing Data Insights

Build helpful visualizations of your data to present your findings to stakeholders. Based on the type of data you are working with, choose the most effective visualization for the problem you’re trying to solve.

Storytelling with Data

Present the results of your analysis to others, providing a compelling narrative around old and new assumptions, and insights into a business problem.

This course is designed with the absolute beginner in mind—so whether you’re brand new to data analytics or you’ve dabbled in it and want to formalize your knowledge and skills, this course is a great place to start.

You don’t need to have experience in data or tech to succeed in this course! Regardless of your age or background, we’ve built a learning experience that will help ensure your success—from the curriculum and hands-on exercises, to the mentorship and support you’ll receive along the way.
2.    Are there payment plans available?
Because the intro course only lasts one month, we require the tuition in a one-time, upfront payment. But we do offer a partial tuition credit if you choose to upgrade to the full career change program!
3.    Is the course 100% online?
Yes, the course is entirely asynchronous and online—so you can study when and wherever you’d like so long as you can get online and complete the course on time.

But this doesn’t mean the learning experience is isolated or lonely! You’ll have your mentor, tutor, and student advisor there to support you—as well as access to our active student community on Slack.
4.    What will I have by the end of the course?
By the end of the course, you’ll have a solid understanding of the field, and hands-on practice in some of the key skills and processes that are vital to the field—as well as a complete, mentor-reviewed project to feature in your professional portfolio!

When you complete the course, you’ll also receive a signed CareerFoundry certificate. This will make it easy for you to share the news on LinkedIn or with potential employers.
5.    How long does it take to complete the course?
You only need to set aside 15-20 hours per week to complete the course in one month. If you’d like to complete the course more quickly, you can devote up to 30-40 hours per week to complete it in about two weeks.
6.    Is the course content practical and hands-on?
We take a rigorously practical approach to learning. You’ll have the opportunity to apply everything you learn in practical ways. Every exercise builds up to a completed portfolio project that your mentor will review and that will show employers the in-demand skills you learn in the course.
7.    What are the minimum requirements (prerequisites, system, hardware, tools)?
Because the course is designed with the absolute beginner in mind, there are no prerequisites for enrollment. You don’t need a background in coding or tech!

All you need to be successful in this course is:
  • The motivation to learn and grow
  • An interest in data analytics
  • Written and spoken English skills at a level B2 or higher

In addition, there are a few tools you’ll need, as well as some system/hardware requirements to be aware of. You can check out all the course details in the Intro to Data Analytics information sheet.

8.    Do I have to pay for the tools?
All the software you need will be available with free trials, which will be valid for the duration of the course. You can, of course, opt for paid tools, but the cost is not included in the course tuition.
9.    Am I required to enroll in the full Data Analytics Program after the intro course?
There is no automatic or required enrollment in the Data Analytics Program at the end of this course.

That said, if you fall in love with data analytics during the intro course and you want to pursue a career in the field, the full Data Analytics Program is the natural next step. It includes expert mentorship, full and hands-on immersion in the field, portfolio reviews, individualized career coaching, and a job guarantee.
